Ayurvedic Treatments available at student clinic only €25

Abhyanga: Ayurvedic full body massage (Usually €85)

Abhyanga is the Sanskrit word for an oil massage given to the entire body and it comes under the category of Sneha therapies in Ayurveda.

Abhyanga gently stimulates the muscles, joints and Marma points to leave you feeling energised and refreshed.  Commencing with a cupping and kneading action to prepare the skin & muscles for the application of warm oil, the body is then systematically covered in warm oil and gentle, stimulating long strokes are applied to the muscles with short circular strokes to the joints.

Karana Purana: Ear treatment using warm oil (Usually €65)

Our senses are connected to the five elements.  Hearing is connected to air and space so it is a location where those elements or Vata collects.

In Karana Purana or ear therapy, the ears are massaged and then filled with warm herbal oils which lubricate the delicate filaments of the ear canal, dislodging impurities and sharpening hearing. The treatment is very effective in reducing Vata in the body. It is especially recommended for jaw and neck tensions, ringing in the ears, Vata headaches, itching and dryness in the ears.

Karana Purana creates a feeling of deep restfulness and may be useful in treating many conditions, such as:

  • Brings healing energy to the reflexology points on the ears
  • Alleviates restlessness and nervousness
  • Brings better sleep and helps with insomnia
  • Increases mental clarity
  • Reduces jaw and neck tension
  • Calms vertigo
  • Balances Vata
Kati Basti – Lower back treatment (Usually €75)

The Katti Basti begins with a lower back massage, the back is then wiped with warm water before a dough ring is placed on the lower back.  It is applied to the lumbar-sacral area of the spine, which is a major site of Vata. The warm medicated oil is slowly poured or swabbed onto the lower back in the dough ring. When the oil cools down, it is squeezed out with cotton gauze and the procedure is repeated a few times. Katti basti has a wide use for any pain, strain, or tension in lower or upper back. Most of the time, vata dosha is the culprit in this area.
An Ayurvedic explanation: In the subtle body, the nadis emerge from manipura (navel) chakra and supply energy to the upper and lower extremities and back.
The indications for this therapy are:

  • Backache (particularly the lumbar region)
  • Degenerative spine changes
  • Compressed discs
  • Osteoporosis
  • Sciatica
  • Hip pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Spinal cord compression.

The healing properties of herbal oils used for this basti deeply clean and fortify the blood, build strong muscle and connective tissues, and lubricate the joints. Kati basti is likely to alleviate most types of low-back pain. This special technique is aimed at providing relief by bathing the lower back for twenty to fifty minutes.

Nabhi Vijnanam -Naval pulse correction (Usually €60)

Abdominal massage with warm oil followed by gentle stretches. For aches, pains and to ease the ill effects of any emotional and physical trauma you may have suffered.

About this treatment
The abdominal area is often overlooked when it comes to massage but Ayurveda places great importance to massaging this area as the Nabhi (naval centre) is located here. This naval centre, according to Ayurveda & Yogic Sciences occupies the most important position in our bodies. Seventy-two-thousand Nadis are regulated by the Nabhi. Any imbalances in the Nabhi, due to emotional or physical trauma affect the entire physiology of the mind and body. If this centre is dislodged from its position, it can cause severe aches and pains, diarrhoea or constipation, tension etc. In this procedure the position of the Nabhi is checked and corrected with specific exercises and massage.

Shiro-Abhyanga – Indian head massage (Usually €70)

The head is often overlooked when it comes to massage but according to Ayurveda it is one of the most important places to massage as it has profound effects on the entire body.

What is Shiro-Abhyanga (Indian Head Massage)?

As the common name suggests this massage technique comes from India and to be more precise is aTraditional Ayurvedic treatment.  It is type of massage derived from the Ayurvedic tradition that focuses on the head, shoulders and neck.

According to the ancient system of Ayurveda, the head area holds great healing potential. It is an area of the body with the highest density of Marma points (energy channels) and other energy gateways into the body (this is a similar to acupressure points in Traditional Chinese Medicine). In Ayurveda, Marma points are used in Abhyanga & Shiroabhyanga. These points are used to unblock energy channels & encourage the flow of energy (prana) in the entire body.

Through a variety of different techniques, the massage works to release any blocked negative energy in the body that may be manifesting itself as disease or injury in any one of the seven Chakras (energy centres) of the body. It does so by applying pressure to certain points (marma points) on the neck, shoulders and head that correspond to each Chakra (which is a similar approach to that of reflexology). This unblocks the energy channels, and allows for a free flow of energy around the body, restoring the individual to optimum health and feelings of wellbeing

It is therapeutic for many conditions, such as Memory Loss; Insomnia; Stress; High Blood Pressure; Hair Loss; Depression; Chronic Fatigue; Chronic Pain.

At Satmya we take pride in performing Classical Indian Head Massage according to Ayurvedic principles. All the oils we use are 100% natural and organic where possible. We use medicinal herbal oils where necessary.
